Terrence Howard gets houses and cars—Ex-Wife gets bicycle!?

Many family law lawyers will say that there is no winning and losing in family law. In most separations and divorces, there is some ‘give and take’ rather than the feeling of ‘wining and losing.’ Oscar-nominated actor Terrence Howard, however, really seems to have ‘won’ in his divorce settlement, leaving his wife of one year with little more than a bicycle and bruised ego. Whoa mummy! Movie Star Brendan Fraser seeks to reduce $900,000 Annual Alimony Payment

A once wildly popular actor and star of the Mummy franchise, actor Brendan Fraser pleaded with a Connecticut court last month to reduce his $900,000 per year alimony payment.

The star married his ex-wife, actress Afton Smith, in 1998 after a courtship of five years, only to divorce one year later in 1999. The couple have three children.

At the time that his divorce was initially settled in 2009, Fraser was worth an estimated $45 million. However, since that time, the actor’s earning power has plummeted considerably, and he has cited a number of unspecified “medical issues” as the cause. Read More…

Judd and Franchitti say ‘I don’t’ after 11 years

Actress Ashley Judd and professional race car driver, Dario Franchitti, announced their separation this week, after 11 years of marriage. After a fairytale wedding in Scotland, and years of Judd devotedly attending Franchitti’s races, it appears as though the pair plan to remain friends, but not married. As most family law practitioners know, dissolving relationships sometimes start amicably, and end elsewhere, once reality sets in.

The pair did not have children, so child support will be a non-issue in their matrimonial matter. However, equalization of net family property and spousal support may be the points at which the pair begin to butt heads. Read More…
